  • Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing

I have been analyzing wireless communications for more than 30 years. I am president of Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing, a pioneering consulting firm that helps create new and enhance existing wireless data businesses in the United States and abroad.

Previously, I created the world's first wireless data newsletter, wireless data conference, cellular conference and FM radio subcarrier newsletter. I was instrumental in creating and developing the world's first cellular magazine.

I also helped create and run the first association in the U.S. for the paging and mobile telephone industries.

Lack of posting: Working on WIC Weblog, Wireless Podcast Report

Sorry for the lack of posts but in addition to my day job of wireless data consulting I’ve also been working on a few other weblogs including the “WIC Weblog” and “Wireless Podcast Report.”

The Wireless Podcast Report covers — surprise — developments in podcasts over wireless networks.  I like the subject and see the potential for producing and transmitting podcasts to wireless devices.  It’s already occurring and I can’t imagine that it won’t increase dramatically.

I posted an audio file on the WIC Weblog that discusses the value of podcasts for the wireless industry.  Speaking of the WIC Weblog….

WIC Weblog

I established the WIC Weblog and I’m paid to write it.  It’s the first weblog from the CTIA — from its Wireless Internet Caucus that is involved in exploring wireless data issues of nationwide importance and offering solutions.

If you need to understand major issues under discussion by the wireless industry, you might want to check out the weblog.  Much of the WIC’s work is accomplished through its four Action Teams:  Enterprise, Messaging, Metrics and Mobile Content.

It covers such issues as: Cellular operators and content developers establishing recommendations for classifying wireless content for adults and minors, nationwide interoperability of MMS (such as camera phone photos and videos), super-distribution (users recommending content to other users who could purchase the content) and developing cellular “short codes” used for SMS to order products and receive information.

If you’d like to listen to a summary of Action Teams’ issues, I posted an audio file on the WIC Weblog.

Stay tuned...much more to come

"Wireless Muse: Reiter's Wireless Data Weblog" is my fourth weblog and there will be many more articles to come.  It's somewhat of a "continuation" of my first weblog.

I established my first weblog, "Reiter's Wireless Data Web Log" (yes, similar title but with the now-preferred spelling of "weblog") in the fall of 2001.  It was relatively early in the days of weblogs and there were far fewer weblog hosting companies.

I picked Weblogger.com as offering one of the most full-featured (in those days), easy to use and reliable weblog services.  I tested a variety of hosting companies, too, such as Blogger (too unreliable) and Radio Userland (I liked it but already had many posts on Weblogger.com).

Onward and upward

Weblogger.com continues to plug away and I recently updated "Reiter's Wireless Data Web Log."  However, Weblogger.com's platform doesn't seem to have kept up with offering the much richer feature sets and user interfaces that are available, for example, from TypePad.

For example, I'm playing around with podcasts, using Audioblog, and it's very easy to transmit an audio file with audio controls to TypePad/Movable Type weblogs.  But there's no automatic way to easily post podcasts via Audioblog to Weblogger.com.  (I'm also eagerly waiting for Odeo to offer podcast creation tools.)

So...I think this weblog will be my "main" personal wireless data weblog, with the exception of wireless imaging that I discuss in "Reiter's Camera Phone Repor."  My other weblog, the "WIC Weblog," is a paid consulting project for the Wireless Internet Caucus, the wireless data group within the CTIA.

FYI:  This weblog was originally my first test weblog (with a completely different template) when I was fortunate to be a beta tester for TypePad more than two years ago.  I just erased virtually all the "test" posts but kept (for historical reference!) a few.  Hence, the reason for the two-year hiatus between this article and the previous articles.

More to come

As the headline says -- "stay tuned" -- for more articles (and podcasts) about wireless data.

This new weblog also gives me the opportunity to activate one of the many wireless-related domain Musesnames I registered years ago:  WirelessMuse.com.  If I ever retire and want to sell my corporate URL -- WirelessInternet.com -- I'll probably use WirelessMuse as my main domain name.

After all, I am very Muse-like (albeit male)!  Reiter: The god of wireless data inspiration!

(Note:  www.WirelessMuse.com should be active July 30 or 31 after the domain mapping kicks in is now active and automatically forwards to reiter.typepad.com/winternet.)
